Ana: A Childcare Business
Building a Free Life with The Infant School
Cuidado Infantil is a sunny childcare center on the third story of a San Francisco Victorian in the heart of the Mission District. For Ana, the owner of Cuidado and an immigrant from Nicaragua, establishing her childcare business wasn’t easy. With years of experience working in positions where she wasn’t allowed to take days off for being sick, she had dreams of owning her own childcare. But with little cash on hand and no real savings, she wasn’t sure where to turn.
She started with research by visiting other childcare centers to, took careful notes, and invested in some basics that allowed her to open her doors. In 2006, Ana converted the living room of her family’s apartment for the childcare, but initial reactions were mixed from prospective parents: “First thing parents did was notice the sofa and TV. They knew I’d be telling their kids ‘Oh no no no! Don’t touch that. Oh no no no! Be careful!’” Ana knew she had some more work to do, but it would take time and money to invest. So she opened up an Individual Development Account at Mission Asset Fund (MAF) in 2009 so she could save $2,000 and get a match of $2,000.
Without experience saving, Ana was discouraged at first: “It was frustrating because sometimes I could only save $20 a month, and that’s not much. There was a time when I wanted to withdraw from the program but MAF convinced me because if I withdrew, I wouldn’t get the match.” In 2011, she withdrew the $4,000 and was able to invest in more play equipment for her childcare, bringing a steady stream of families to her center. The incentive of the match provided Ana with a tangible reason to save: “If the IDA program didn’t exist, I wouldn’t have achieved what I have. My friends say—oh I bought this new car. But those are material things that will lose value. Instead, I invest in my business. It’s like planting a tree, you keep watering the tree and it grows fruits.”
By investing in her business with an IDA, Ana felt a peace of mind: “It’s knowing that when my daughter gets out of school, she can come eat a hot meal here. It’s knowing when I’m not feeling well, I don’t open. I can take a vacation without feeling like I’m going to get in trouble. At times I am afraid what will happen if no more kids come to the childcare. Now I have a savings goal and I will be able to afford to retire.”
With a positive experience saving towards a goal, Ana was inspired to set a new, larger goal for her family: homeownership. With the help of another IDA from EARN, she saved part of a downpayment.. and purchased a home in November of 2011 in Pittsburg, California. And with this, the children at Cuidado no longer had to worry about spilling on her sofa or knocking over a personal belonging. Having a home of their own has also changed her own children’s lives: “When we were renting, my son couldn’t run and my daughter couldn’t listen to music because the neighbor would get the broom and bang on the ceiling. Now, my kids can be birds and fly as freely as they want. When my husband gets home, he waters the garden. When my son gets home, he runs around as much as he wants. When my daughter gets home, she listens to music as loud as she wants. They are free. Before, they were missing their childhood.”
For Ana’s, the IDA program helped her hone in on her business and personal goals…and achieve them.

Cuidado Infantil es un centro de cuidado de los niños soleado en el tercer piso de un edificio victoriano de San Francisco en el corazón del Distrito de la Misión. Para Ana, la dueña de Cuidado y una inmigrante de Nicaragua, el establecimiento de su negocio de cuidado de niños no fue fácil. Con años de experiencia en trabajos donde no se le permitía tomar días de enfermedad, ella tenía sueños de ser dueña de su propio cuidado de los niños. Sin embargo, con poco dinero en mano y sin muchos ahorros, no estaba segura a dónde acudir.
Ella comenzó con la investigación, visitando otros centros de cuidado infantil, tomó notas detalladas, e invirtió en algunos conceptos básicos que le permitieron abrir sus puertas. En 2006, Ana convirtió a la sala de estar del apartamento de su familia para el cuidado de los niños, pero las reacciones iniciales de los padres futuros fueron mezclados: "Lo primero que los padres veían era el sofá y la televisión. Sabían que iba a decírselo a sus hijos "¡Oh, no, no, no! No toques eso. ¡Oh, no, no, no! ¡Ten cuidado! '"Ana sabía que tenía más trabajo que hacer, pero se necesitaría mucho tiempo y dinero para invertir. Así que se abrió una Cuenta Igualada (IDA) en El Fondo Popular de la Misión (MAF) en 2009 para que pudiera ahorrar $ 2.000 y conseguir una igualada de $ 2.000.
Sin experiencia de ahorrar, Ana se desanimó al principio: "Era frustrante porque a veces yo sólo podía ahorrar $ 20 al mes, y eso no es mucho. Hubo un tiempo cuando quería retirarme del programa, pero MAF me convenció, porque si me retiraba, no iba conseguir el igualar. "En 2011, retiró los $ 4.000 y fue capaz de invertir en más equipos de juego por su guardería que trajo un corriente constante de familias a su centro. El incentivo del igualar le dio a Ana un razón tangible para ahorrar: "Si el programa IDA no existiera, no habría logrado lo que tengo. Mis amigos dicen, ¡oh compré este auto nuevo. Pero esas son cosas materiales que van a perder valor. En su lugar, invertir en mi negocio. Es como plantar un árbol, usted mantiene regando el árbol y crece frutas.”
Al invertir en su negocio con una IDA, Ana sintió una paz de la mente: "Es saber que cuando mi hija sale de la escuela, ella puede venir a comer una comida caliente aquí. Es saber que si yo no me siento bien, no lo abro. Puedo tomar vacaciones sin sentir que me voy a meter en problemas. A veces tengo miedo de lo que sucederá si los niños paran de venir a la guardería. Ahora tengo una meta de ahorro y voy a ser capaz de retirarme. "
Con una experiencia positiva hacia una meta de ahorro, Ana se inspiró para fijar una nueva meta, más grande para su familia: la vivienda propia. Con la ayuda de otra IDA con EARN, ahorro dinero por un pago inicial y compró una casa en noviembre de 2011 en Pittsburg, California. Y con esto, los niños de Cuidado ya no tenían que preocuparse de derramar algo en el sofá o golpear otro objeto personal. Tener una casa propia también ha cambiado la vida de sus propios hijos: "Cuando estábamos alquilando, mi hijo no podía correr y mi hija no podía escuchar música porque el vecino tomaba una escoba y golpeaba el techo. Ahora, mis hijos pueden ser pájaros y volar tan libremente como lo desean. Cuando mi esposo llega a casa, él le pone agua al jardín. Cuando mi hijo llega a casa, corre alrededor cuanto él quiere. Cuando mi hija llega a casa, ella escucha a la música tan fuerte como ella quiere. Ellos son libres. Antes, se estaban perdiendo su infancia ".
Para Ana, el programa IDA le ayudó a perfeccionar su negocio y metas personales ... y alcanzarlas.
